Allen University |
| Allen University opened its doors in 1870 to provide educational opportunities for newly freed slaves. Its roots are grounded in the belief that men and women who are prepared are better citizens and can make a greater contribution to society. Today, Allen University continues its legacy of providing relevant training in a close-knit, nurturing environment that prepares men and women for life and careers. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) as a whole have made a tremendous contribution to higher education in producing the majority of African American professionals in our nation's workforce. I, too, am a product of an HBCU and have witnessed the value of such an education. Many of our faculty and staff share similar experiences and a commitment to providing a sound academic and social environment for students. Allen seeks to bring to the classroom faculty who have rich experiences in academia. The AU community also consists of alumni, corporate partners and dedicated individuals from many churches who provide moral and financial support to Allen in order to ensure that each student has every opportunity for success to carry out his or her life mission. |

Lewis College of Business |
| Lewis Business College was founded at the beginning of the Great Depression in 1928 by Violet T. Lewis, a double minority—an African-American female. Dr. Lewis was possessed with the idea of providing education at the post- secondary level in office occupations, for African-American young adults in Indianapolis, Indiana. Due to the segregation laws at that time, the private and public post-secondary schools in Indiana did not accept African-American students. Lewis College of Business was designated by the US Secretary of Education as a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in 1987. This designation was granted by the United States Secretary of Education. As such, Lewis College of Business is the only Historically Black College in Michigan. Lewis joined Cheyney State University, and Lincoln University, Pennsylvania; Wilberforce University and Central State University Ohio; and Central State University, Ohio; as one of the HBCU’s in the northern region of the United States. The State of Michigan has recognized the historical significance of the College. In September 1988 the Michigan Historical Commission erected a Michigan historical marker at the first permanent site of the College at John R and Ferry streets in Detroit, Michigan. |

Lincoln University |
| Lincoln University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was chartered in April 1854 as Ashmun Institute. As Horace Mann Bond, '23, the eighth president of Lincoln University, so eloquently cites in the opening chapter of his book, Education for Freedom, this was "the first institution found anywhere in the world to provide a higher education in the arts and sciences for male youth of African descent." The story of Lincoln University goes back to the early years of the 19th century and to the ancestors of its founder, John Miller Dickey, and his wife, Sarah Emlen Cresson. The Institute was renamed Lincoln University in 1866 after President Abraham Lincoln. Since its inception, Lincoln has attracted an interracial and international enrollment from the surrounding community, region, and around the world. The University admitted women students in 1952, and formally associated with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1972 as a state-related, coeducational university. Lincoln currently enrolls approximately 2,000 students. Located in southern Chester County, Lincoln is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and offers academic programs in undergraduate study in the arts, sciences as well as graduate programs in human services, reading, education, mathematics, and administration. The University is proud of its faculty for the high quality of their teaching, research, and service, and of its alumni, among the most notable of whom are: Langston Hughes, '29, world-acclaimed poet; Thurgood Marshall, '30, first African-American Justice of the US Supreme Court; Hildrus A. Poindexter, '24, internationally known authority on tropical diseases; Roscoe Lee Browne, '46, author and widely acclaimed actor of stage and screen; Jacqueline Allen, '74, judge for the Court of Common Pleas, Philadelphia; and Eric C. Webb, '91, author, poet and editor-in-chief of Souls of People. |

Livingstone College |
| Livingstone College and Hood Theological Seminary were originally founded as Zion Wesley Institute by a group of A.M.E. Zion ministers for the purpose of training ministers in the Cabarrus County town of Concord, North Carolina in 1879. After three brief sessions, directed by principals Bishop C. R. Harris and Professor A.S. Richardson, the Institute ultimately closed in Concord. In 1881, Dr. Joseph Charles Price and Bishop J. W. Hood changed their roles as delegates to the Ecumenical Conference and became fund-raisers with the mission to re-establish Zion Wesley Institute. The Rowan County town of Salisbury, just 20 miles northeast of Concord, gave the Trustees a generous donation of $1,000 and an invitation to relocate the school in Salisbury. They accepted both gifts, and the College re-opened in Salisbury in 1882 with Dr. Price as President. The new site was J. M. Gray’s farm called Delta Grove, which consisted of one building and 40 acres of land. |

Morehouse College |
| Preparing Young Men to Change the World With the right resources, politicking or posturing, anyone can be a leader. Right? Wrong. At Morehouse, we are redefining the meaning of leadership. It’s not about attaining the highest title or position, but about attaining skills such as compassion, civility, integrity and even listening. Morehouse is poised to become the epicenter of ethical leadership as we continue to develop leaders who are spiritually disciplined, intellectually astute and morally wise. And leadership first begins at home. Nearly three-fourths of our students volunteer within the community. This volunteerism connects them to their communities and helps them see that, as individuals and as a squadron of educated black men, they can make a difference. Many Morehouse students also travel or study abroad, awakening them to the complexities of a global community. In today’s age, ethical leaders must have an appreciation of different perspectives and customs, and must also be prepared to negotiate the discordant views that are converging from the four corners of the globe. Morehouse is committed to training the leaders who will change their communities, the nation and the world. |

Morgan State University |
| With roots dating back to its founding as a seminary in 1867, Morgan State University remains one of the strongest black colleges in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Support from Andrew Carnegie in the early twentieth century allowed the school to move to its present campus. Growing over the years, the black college was purchased by the State of Maryland but not folded into the state's growing university system. This allowed students at Morgan State to benefit from the state government's stability and growth without forfeiting the school's heritage as a black college. Today at Morgan State University, students enjoy studying at a historically black college that has reinvented itself as Baltimore's public urban university. Liberal arts and engineering programs emphasize the school's focus on urban life and community renewal. State-of-the-art campus buildings offer innovative learning experiences, while performing arts centers add spark to Baltimore's nightlife. |

Wilberforce University |
| Founded in 1856, Wilberforce University can trace its origin to a period of history before the Civil War, when the Ohio Underground Railroad was established as a means of escape for all those blacks who sought their freedom in the North from the yoke of slavery, one of the destination points of this railroad became Wilberforce University. As the Underground Railroad provided a route from physical bondage, the University was formed to provide an intellectual Mecca and refuge from slavery's first rule: ignorance. Wilberforce University, the nation's oldest private, historically black university, was named to honor the great 18th century abolitionist, William Wilberforce. Early in 1856, the Methodist Episcopal Church purchased property for the new institution at Tawawa Springs, near Xenia, Ohio. The school met with early success until the Civil War when enrollment and financial support dwindled. The original Wilberforce closed its doors in 1862. In March of the following year, Bishop Daniel A. Payne of the African Methodist Episcopal Church negotiated to purchase the University's facilities. Payne, a member of the original 1856 corporation, secured the cooperation of John G. Mitchell, principal of the Eastern District Public School of Cincinnati, Ohio and James A. Shorter, pastor of the A.M.E. Church of Zanesville, Ohio. The property was soon turned over to them as agents of the church. |
